Muchos escritores y escritoras han incluido a la madre como personaje relevante en sus novelas y poemas, en ocasiones con inspiración autobiográfica. A propósito del Día de las Madres, el escritor y periodista Arnaldo Rojas, recordó algunas madres inmortalizadas en la literatura, entre ellas, Micaela Antonia Vásquez, abuela, bisabuela y tatarabuela que marcó un legado en el sistema familiar de nuestros directores Milagros del Valle Ortega Vásquez y José Manuel Pérez Ortega

En el libro de Rut, de La Biblia, encontramos a Noemí, una madre que pierde a sus dos hijos y queda desamparada con sus dos nueras, una de ellas es Rut. A partir de esta situación, Noemí protagoniza un tierno relato de conversión, valor, determinación, lealtad y fidelidad.

La Madre (1907) es el título de la obra mas conocida del escritor ruso Máximo Gorki, narra el proceso de transformación de una humilde madre, Pelagia, quien tras la detención de su hijo Pavel, un activista revolucionario, se convierte en una luchadora social. Madre Coraje (1941) es una obra teatral de Bertolt Brecht, cuyo personaje principal es Anna Fierling (Madre Coraje), una astuta vendedora ambulante que en medio de la guerra se las ingenia para sobrevivir, aprovechándose de la situación para vender sus mercancías, pero llega un momento que se ve en la necesidad de vender a sus tres hijos.

Una metáfora cruel con la que el autor critica los horrores de la guerra. Por otras razones, esta otra visión de la maternidad, de la madre desapegada, aparece en las novelas Madame Bovary de Flaubert Anna Karenina, de Tolstoi. Ellas ignoran a sus hijos para entregarse a la pasión amorosa que envuelve sus vidas. En ocasiones, la maternidad es sinónimo de autoridad. El experto en retratar madres frías, despóticas y algo crueles era Federico García Lorca.

Dos de sus obras teatrales, La Casa de Bernarda Alba y Bodas de sangre son la mejor muestra. Las dos madres protagonistas se encuentran extremadamente arraigadas a una tradición que sitúa el “qué dirán” como prioridad. Sin embargo, la relación materno-filial es mucho más dulce en Bodas de sangre –donde la madre proyecta el despotismo y la desconfianza hacia su nuera– que en La casa de Bernarda Alba, donde la protagonista “encarcela” a las hijas sin expresar el más mínimo afecto hacia ellas y se muestra obsesionada por mantener el honor de su familia.

Una madre fuera de lo común es Doña Bárbara, una terrateniente, ruda e insensible por una experiencia traumática que tuvo de adolescente, al ser violada por un grupo de piratas asesinos que también le arrebataron el primer amor de su vida. Tiene una hija, Marisela, a quien abandona y no quiere saber nada de ella. Esta relación forma parte de la simbología del enfrentamiento entre civilización y barbarie que plantea la novela de Rómulo Gallegos.

Pero también en nuestra literatura encontramos el retrato de una madre heroica, en la novela testimonio Se Llamaba SN, de José Vicente Abreu, donde, a partir de su propia experiencia, el autor narra la resistencia de los que son encarcelados y llevados a campos de concentración durante la dictadura de Marcos Pérez Jiménez. El hilo conductor de la narración es la lucha clandestina de un hombre perseguido y torturado por la policía secreta del régimen llamada Seguridad Nacional, de allí el título de la obra.

En medio de este oprobioso escenario, aparece la figura humilde pero combativa de Micaela Antonia Vásquez, la única mujer que se atrevió a llegar al campo de concentración de Guasina en búsqueda de su hijo. Ambos son personajes de la novela, ella con su propio nombre, y él con el seudónimo de Manuel Salazar (su nombre verdadero era Pedro Manuel Vásquez). Ella no solo simboliza la madre de todos los oprimidos sino a la Madre Patria que se resiste a ser doblegada por la tiranía

En definitiva, la literatura presenta tantos perfiles como formas de vivir esta experiencia universal y compleja que es la maternidad. Universalmente se reconoce el amor de madre como el único incondicional, de por vida. Y, un amor tan intenso siempre es un buen motivo para contar grandes historias.
